In January 2009, NZDBA held a race officials course (in conjunction with AusDBF) to qualify those interested in officiating at NZDBA National Championships and sanctioned events.

AusDBF Technical Director (and regular IDBF Race Official) Melanie Cantwell ran the one-day course to up-skill those interested in seeking qualifications in this area. Six dragon boaters (all from AORAKI Dragon Boat Association) attended, and all passed the AusDBF qualification with flying colours.
